MAGHERA POWERS TO TITLE

The College continued on our winning ways when we defeated St Mary's Belfast in the Leonard Cup (U15.5) Hurling final. This group had won the Gallagher Cup convincingly in the previous school year but found themselves up against a very competitive Belfast team in the opening half. Playing against a stiff breeze our lads struggled to get quality possession into their forward line and relied on the accuracy of Enda Downey from frees to gather their three point total in that half, but trailed at the break by 1-3 to 0-3 with Belfast having scrambled a 17th minute goal after a mistake in the Maghera goalmouth. Downey was again on target with two placed balls to open the second half and when Fintan McGrath was pulled down in the penalty area midielder Paddy Quinn stepped up to fire to the net and put his side in front with just seven minutes of the half played. SPC went on to dominate the half as we continuously penned St Mary's back in to their own half - the Belfast side struggling to win any clean ball in the middle third of the pitch. Given our dominance of possession we soon added to our early second half lead with a stream of seven different scorers bisecting the posts although the crucial score came when Cahir Higgins rounded his man, drew the full back to him and lofted the sliothar across  goal for McGrath to finish to the net and finish the Belfast challenge. St Patrick's continued to dominate the play and it was only in the very last play of the game that Belfast managed to get a breakaway goal for their only score of the half.

Sean McGourty of Ulster Schools presented the Leonard Cup to Maghera captain Eoghan MacOscair and he became the fifth St Patrick's winning captain of a very busy term for the College.
